Spider veins, or telangiectasia, are small, dilated capillaries that are visible on the skin’s surface. Spider veins are usually red, purple, or blue in color, and they are aptly named for their spindly appearance. These veins typically develop on the legs and feet. While most cases of spider veins pose no immediate health threat, they can indicate an early onset of venous insufficiency.

Symptoms

Most individuals with spider veins experience little to no symptoms. However, it is possible to experience the following:

  • Dull aches in the affected area(s)
  • Swelling or cramping in the legs
  • Burning pain after standing for long periods of time
